Visiting Menorca

Menorca is one of the Balearic Islands that are preferred by most tourists who prefer a quiet vacation in an interesting place. The hustle and bustle of Ibiza or Mallorca is not for them and they find that Menorca has just the right atmosphere. It is well-known for its natural beauty, acres of vegetation unspoilt by human construction and a picturesque harbor as well as coves, inlets and bays. The average temperature is a cool 15 degrees Centigrade while the hottest you can probably expect is 35 degrees. In winter the temperature sometimes can reach around 4 degrees.

Exploring the Caves

One of the most visited and photographed places in Menorca is the collection of caves that you can explore. These caves were apparently used as dwelling places by the original inhabitants of the island and are quite spacious. Some of them are now used as art galleries, with some very interesting works of art on display. Imagine admiring some great paintings in a cave while you can see and smell the sea not far away!

Ciutadella de Menorca

The second city in population is Ciutadella de Menorca. The harbor is beautiful with small pleasure boats, fishing boats bringing their catch to the sea-food restaurants and the tourist ferries bringing visitors to the city. The major buildings are the cathedral, the local museum, Town Hall and church. You can spend an entire day sightseeing and never be bored with the picture-perfect setting of this lovely island. The narrow streets with its curious names are a feature of Ciutadella.

Visiting Mahon

Mahon is the capital of Menorca and it is one town that you should visit when you are in Menorca. One of the main attractions is a 16th century arch called the Arch of Saint Roch. It is a good example of Catalonian architecture from the 16th century and one which has found its way into many postcards and tourist guides. Two forts that you should also visit are Fort Marlborough and Fort La Fortaleza or simply the Fortress. These are well-maintained tourist attractions that have kept their original design and antiques.

Windmills

You can also visit the small farms that dot the interior of Menorca. Melons, Pomegranates and Figs are grown on the fertile land, watered by windmills that are a feature of the farming communities.

Coves and Inlets

Menorca has many inlets and coves to explore. La Albufera and Fornells are two bays that you can visit and enjoy the salty air and warm sunshine.
